William Chambers

William Chambers was convicted of the murder of his wife Emily Chambers and his mother-in-Law Mary Oakley and sentenced to death.

He shot them on 23 September 1902 at Eversholt, Near Woburn

William Chambers and Emily Chambers had married in 1892 but the marriage was not a happy one and in 1902 she left him.

Emily Chambers then began to take out a separation order and in September 1902 William Chambers was informed that he would have to pay Emily Chambers an allowance. He replied by saying that he would not pay her one penny.

On the evening of 23 September 1902 at 7pm Emily Chambers, Mary Oakley, Mary Oakley's sister and her daughter were sat in the front room of Mary Oakley's house when William Chambers burst in through the back door with a double-barrelled shotgun and shot Mary Oakley in the neck and then shot Emily Chambers in the face and neck. Whilst he was reloading the other people fled.

After William Chambers ran out of the back door and went to an allotment where he shot himself. However, he only blew his jaw off and survived. He then stumbled off to the nearest pub and mumbled that he wanted a brandy. The landlord saw his injuries and called the police.
